Challenging Thoughts:Return of the Prodigal Son Part 1

I’m reading some great books right now and thought I’d share some of the most thought-provoking and interesting comments. I’d love to hear what you think, but please don’t judge a book by just a couple excerpts.

Here’s my first post.  I look forward to chatting with you!

The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen
The author reflects on Rembrandt’s famous painting and shares the spiritual journey these thoughts have taken him on. He looks at the three main characters in the parable, the prodigal son, the father, and the older brother, discussing how they are portrayed by Rembrandt and what he’s learned from them.

I love that Nouwen allows art to be a way for God to speak to him and I am challenged myself, to no longer look at great works of art, be they music, paintings, sculptures, etc. as just man’s creation. I want to ask the Lord, “What do you want to say to me through this?”

I’ve been reading this book VERY slowly; it’s only about 150 pages but it’s taken me about 6 months to get through it. I like slowly chewing on each morsel and letting it sink in before reading ahead. I’ve done lots of underlining and writing along the margins. Here’s what’s speaking to me right now.

An Invitation to Joy
Taken from pgs 114-115
“God rejoices. Not because the problems of the world have been solved, not because all human pain and suffering have come to an end, nor because thousands of people have been converted and are now praising him for his goodness. No, God rejoices because one of his children who was lost has been found. What I am called to is to enter into that joy. It is God’s joy, not the joy that the world offers. It is the joy that comes from seeing a child walk home amid all the destruction, devastation, and anguish of the world….
I am not accustomed to rejoicing in things that are small, hidden, and scarcely noticed by the people around me. I am generally ready and prepared to receive bad news, to read about wars, violence, and crimes, and to witness conflict and disarray….
I have to learn to ‘steal’ all the real joy there is to steal and lift it up for other to see. Yes, I know that not everybody has been converted yet, that there is not yet peace everywhere, that all pain has not yet been taken away, but still, I see people turning and returning home; I hear voices that pray; I notice moments of forgiveness, and I witness many signs of hope. I don’t have to wait until all is well, but I can celebrate every little hint of the Kingdom that is at hand.”

There’s so much more I want to share. But let’s chew on this morsel for a little while before we move on. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

What Are We Gonna Eat?!

I’ve decided to move the page called What Are We Gonna Eat over to a post. That way each week when I update my menu you’ll be able to see it without checking a separate page. For those who’ve never visited this page, let me explain a little.  I have found that planning a weekly menu is not only enjoyable to me ( I know some people HATE doing it) but also very money saving. So I figured I’d share with you what we’re eating. Feel free to steal ideas and recipes. Here’s some of my guidelines:

  • Whenever possible I’ll have a link to a recipe, if there isn’t one and you are dying to know how to make something I mention, just leave me a comment, with your email address, and I’ll gladly send it to you.
  • I will usually plan five meals. That allows for a day of eating leftovers and for changes in plans. If I plan a meal and we don’t eat it one week, I’ll move it to the next week.
  • I try to chose lost cost and healthy, low fat meals. There are, of course exceptions so don’t just assume that if I list it it’s healthy. :-)
  • I get a LOT of my recipes from www.allrecipes.com if you’ve never visited this sight I suggest you do so.
  • I usually chose one meal each week that does not have meat. Even if they don’t have meat they will usually have an alternate source of protein and iron so don’t rule them out just because they are vegetarian. My husband eats them and I promise he’s not wasting away!
  • I’d love to hear your comments on recipe I mention that you’ve tried.

So, without further adieu…our weekly menu:

Monday: Roasted Chicken Thighs with baked sweet potatoes and green beans.
Tuesday: Baked Shrimp with rice pilaf and spinach
Wednesday: Meatball sandwiches
Thursday: Homemade Chicken Artichoke pizza
Friday: Tomato Soup with Asiago Cheese and Grilled Cheese and Tomato sandwiches

Happy eating!

Five Years Ago Today…

…I felt the most beautiful I’ve ever felt,

…I was surrounded by friends and family,

…I was excited and nervous,

…my daddy walked me down the aisle,

…my sister and best friend sang for me,

…our little ring bearer did an army crawl across the sanctuary during the ceremony,

…a close friend spoke to us about love and God’s goodness, most of which I do not remember,

…we ate Thai food and celebrated with 300 of our closest friends,

…I joined my life with the best and godliest man on this planet,

and I’ve not regretted for a moment since!

Day 6 and Counting….

Last week we bought Jennika a big girl bed and moved her out of her crib. I was a little nervous and not sure if she’s stay in it. We’ve reached almost a week and she’s doing great! She loves her big girl bed and is always excited to be in it. Most mornings and after naps she doesn’t even get out of it. She just sits in there and plays and talks until we come and get her. What a big girl!

Our Earth

Last week I posted this poll and promised to follow-up with more.

I’m glad I did the poll first because I have to admit I was quite surprised by the results. As of today the results show that 50% of those who voted believe that global warming is not a reality but simply a scare tactic of environmentalists. The definition of global warming is “the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation.“ Scientist generally agree that from 1905 to 2005 (we have accurate temperature records for the last 100 years) the “global surface temperature” has increased about 1.3 degrees. There is much debate about what is causing this general warming, but very little about whether it’s actually happening or not. The numbers from the data over the last 100 years simply prove that our earth is slowly getting warmer.

It is theorized by most scientists that the increase in temperature is due, in part, to the increase in anthropogenic gases, or gases that are produced primarily from human activities.  There are lots of greenhouse gases produced from many different sources and this post could quickly get very technical and over my head. So I’m going to try to keep it very simple and use a very easy example, carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is generated as a by-product when fossil fuels are burned. So every fossil fuel power plant and everything that requires power drawn from such a plant is creating and releasing carbon dioxide. Every time we drive a car we burn fossil fuel and release carbon dioxide into the air. You can imagine that creates a lot of gas! It is estimated that each individual produces about 17.3 cubic tons of carbon dioxide each year from their daily lifestyle!

Now, I know that we could probably get into a pretty heated debate about whether or not carbon dioxide really does contribue to the overall increase in global temperature. But instead of going down that long and winding road, how about if we just stop for a second and ask what if? What if it’s true and every time we drive, drink out of a plastic bottle, burn recycleable garbage, etc. we are essentially heating up our earth? Studies of past and present weather trends and snow pack in the Rocky Mountain Region (sorry that’s where I live) estimate that by the year 2100 the average temperate in a best case senario, meaning we’ve drastically reduced greenhouse gas emissions, will have raised by 8.5 degrees!. That means that our snowpack, our water during the summer months, will be almost 54% less than what it currently is! Worst case senarios predict that the temperature will rise over 15 degrees. That would mean no snowpack in the mountain. Scary!

Now, the flip side, what if it’s all a big hoax? What if greenhouse gases aren’t really causing our earth to heat up? What if we do work really hard, make sacarfices to cut down on our gas emissions and it doesn’t change things? Would we have we wasted our time, money, and energy?

I would say no. I would say that we have done the best we could to manage the resources we have on this earth. I would argue that we have simply been good stewards of the Lord’s earth and while the results did not turn out as we thought, we were faithful with what was given to us. One reader’s comment well expressed my feelings on this matter. She basically said, whether or not global warming is actually happening, why shouldn’t we be trying to reduce waste in our lives? I feel that as believers it is our responsiblity to be smart with ALL our resources; money, time, food, plants, animals, and our habitat.

So, what can you do to decrease your individual impact on our earth and be a good steward?
Think about doing one, some, or all of these basic suggestions:
1. Drive a fuel effecient car.
2. Make as few car trips as possible by carpooling and combining trips so you’re not driving as often.
3. Recycle!
4. Replace all the old light bulbs in your house with the newer more effecient bulbs. Yes they cost more, but they typically last between two and eight years, so they really end up paying for themselves!
5. Turn all those lights in your house off.
6. Turn off your computer when you go to bed.
7. When you have to replace applicances, buy Energy Star rated applicances.
8. Turn your termostat down in the winter and up in the summer.  Just a degree or two makes a big difference.
9. Purchase wind power. Many power companies offer this option. By doing this your are supporting alternative energy sources and making them more readliy available.
10. Replace or recaulk windows and doors to keep your warm or cold air inside your house.
11. Add more/thicker insulation in your attic.
12. Make a compost. Visit this site for a really simple and cheap one to make.
13. Hang clothes to dry instead of using the dryer. It’s actually much better on your clothes too.
14. Whenever possible, don’t buy items packed in plastic. Use a water filter instead of buying bottled water and request paper instead of plastic at the grocery store. Or better still, bring your own resuable bags! Many stores will give you a 5 cent credit for every bag you bring in.
15. Shop locally made/grown products whenever possible.

This is just a really basic and short list. There are TONS of ways to decrease waste and emissions. What ways can you think of to be a good steward of our earth? I’d love to hear your ideas.

Oh Boy!

We found out this week that we are having a little boy! I’ve had my suspicions, this pregnancy feels so different from the last. We are thrilled to know that Korban Kristopher is healthy and doing well. We’re excited to meet him in a few months.
